Vintage Dressing: Is The Fashion Industry Going Back In Time?
The world seems to slowly travel back in time especially in the fashion industry. Fashion has certainly come a long way from the top hats and petticoats era of the past. Clothes today have become a great combination of aesthetics and function. One might think that because of the progress that we have made in the area of clothing and fashion in general, we would not look back at our past. Reality, as always, has a way of denying what we all think
"Vintage Dressing" is a colloquialism commonly used to refer to all old style of clothing. A generally accepted industry standard is that items made between 20 and 100 years ago are considered "vintage" if they clearly reflect the styles and trends of the era they represent. Vintage Dressing appears to be very common not only in Nigeria but all parts of the world. Many people even organise events with a vintage theme for example, popular Nigerian fashion designer, Veekee James who got married very reecently decided to have a Vintage themed wedding where all the guest are to wear clothes that were a trend in the 1900.
So why is old school fashion coming back? Well, some people would see it as a metaphor for us trying to reclaim a past that never really belonged to us. It can also be a metaphor for trying to extract the bet things out of the past. When old school fashion was brought into this century, we never really brought all the bad memories with it. Old school fashion could either be a great example of recapturing the beautiful past or it could be a bad metaphor for selective amnesia. Nigeria's fasion scene, like a grand stage, has seen trends come and go, from the regal peplums to the shimmering disco era and now the enduring allure of Old Nollywood style.
Many Nigerian's has been inspired by various social media platforms especially TikTok to dress like their favourite old school actress from a 90s movie. Even Universities now dedicate a day to old school dressings especially for the final year students who do this and some later find themselves sticking to this aesthetic. According to then old rule, fashion trend run in 20 year cycles. The infinite 20 year loop applies also to music, interior and furniture design, TV, film and art.
As we move forward into new fashion frontiers, remember that style is subjective, and what may seem trendy today could become cringe-worthy tomorrow.
